Windows and secondary glazing

The windows in the house are mainly sash windows and were single glazed and therefore draughty and cold. The house is in a conservation area so we were limited to the alterations we could make especially at the front and side of the house. We made enquiries and the limitations were that the windows would have to look exactly the same with no changes visible. This meant that even if we had been able to go for a double glazing solution, it would have been prohibitively expensive. So we looked at secondary glazing and discovered that only two companies could provide it – Everest or Anglian. It always seems tricky dealing with glazing companies due to sales tactics etc. and because it is expensive. We went with Everest in the end and we had no problems and they did a very good job.

The windows in the study and library couldn’t be done as there is not enough frame above the window sill to attach anything to. These windows are not actually sash windows but fixed apart from a small top window. They are quite decorative with a flower and leaf frame. All the other windows were done and the frames lined up with the originals so that it is not possible to see them.

Immediately, it made a big difference – it was amazing how much quieter and warmer the house was straight away. It is great now that the house is more contained and has a better feel to it. I would recommend anyone to look at secondary glazing if you live in an old, draughty house.
